CARACAS STOPOVER
3 Days / 2 Nights |
Caracas lies in a
series of valleys 1000 meters above sea level and surrounded by
majestic tree-clad mountains. Traces of the city's colonial roots are
still proudly displayed in the historic buildings and contrast
dramatically with the imposing modern skyscrapers of the city.
As if to confirm its character as a modern, progressive city, Caracas
has conscientiously preserved some relics of its past, including
houses, public buildings, lanes and street corners that look very much
today as they did hundreds of years ago. We'll find a colonial city of
quiet charm and ancient aristocracy, in whose midst arose a generation
of heroes who spread the cry for liberty throughout Latin America.
We'll visit, between other things, the Birthplace of Simón
Bolívar “El Libertador”, with its
typically discreet and austere colonial architecture; the Concejo
Municipal, where the Act of Venezuelan Independence was signed; La Casa
Amarilla, the former Royal Prison and now the Foreign Office; El
Capitolio, where two notable historical records can be found: the Act
of Independence and the epic mural by Tovar y Tovar representing the
battle of Carabobo; Plaza Bolívar, where the history of
Caracas began; Quinta Anauco, where a long and illustrious line of
marquises lived until the death in 1837 of the last Marquis del Toro;
this charming country house also welcomed the Libertador
Simón Bolívar on his last visit to Caracas.
Caracas is a modern metropolis, with beautiful buildings as the Teatro
Teresa Carreño, where concerts, operas and other events are
held, and the Museo de Bellas Artes. Caracas also offers a variety of
stores, from leather goods to jewelry.

ANGEL FALLS
3
Days / 2 Nights |
Between the
rainforest of the Amazon Basin and the watershed of the Orinoco River
in central Venezuela is a rugged wall of remote mountains and deep,
heavily forested canyons. Many of the mountains have precipitous rock
walls that rise to over 1800 meters (6000 feet) where they end in an
almost perfectly flat top. These formations are known by their Indian
name: Tepuis.
The most famous of these tepuis is the Auyan-tepui, from which plummets
the world’s highest waterfall - Angel Falls (979 meters; 3211
feet)). The fall is more than twice as high as the Empire State
Building and three times higher than the Eiffel Tower.
It was 1935, when a stranger offered Jimmy Angel 5000 to fly him to an
uncharted mountaintop in southern Venezuela, and the Missouri-born bush
pilot, down on his luck, jumped at the chance. He flew his mysterious
passenger to this mountaintop, and after a bumpy landing in his
Flamingo monoplane, pilot and passenger set up camp by a stream. In
three days, they found 75 pounds of gold. Returning to Caracas, Mr.
Angel lost contact with his passenger. Trying to return, but without
his treasure-guide, he fruitlessly scoured vast wilderness for the
golden stream. One day he crash-landed on top of a 2400 meters (7872
feet) high mountain, the Auyan-tepui. Two weeks later the exhausted
adventurer emerged on foot, bearing with him knowledge of a secret the
local Pemón Indians had guarded for centuries:
Churún Merú, the highest waterfall in the world.
