By boarding a ferry across the River Plate from Buenos Aires, you can virtually
step back in time with a visit to the enchanting town of Colonia. As its name
suggests, the town of Colonia was once a colony under control of both the
Spanish and the Portuguese during different periods in history. The town is so
historically well preserved, retaining most of its decorative buildings and lined
with cobblestone streets, that it is considered a UNESCO world heritage site.
Visit the streets of Santa Rita, San Gabriel, the Matriz church, the Bastion del
Carmen, the famous Calle de los Suspiros (street of sighs) Ð which is often used
for historical films - the Puerta del Campo and the Plaza Mayor 25 de Mayo.

visit by day or overnight.
Travellers are hosted by the Ranch owners with very comfortable

most of them decorated with authentic colonial furniture. Horse riding,
swimming in natural lagoons, carriages and cart rides are some of the
activities guests will enjoy at a Ranch and you can participate in the
daily work of the gauchos.

is justifiably a national
monument. The location and style of construction are very attractive.
It has much more the feel of a large working ranch than of a commercial
hotel.
In the afternoon the gauchos will put on a team penning show along with
other events, like pole bending and bull riding. The Uruguayans are the
world champions at team penning. You will be greatly impressed by their
ability.

SAN PEDRO DE TIMOTE
San Pedro de
Timote was founded in 1854 by
Pedro Jose Jackson on the lands of an ancient cattle farm of the Jesuit
fathers. Through the years, it has remained one of the important cattle
ranches of Uruguay.
In 1997, it was declared a Historical National Monument because of its
architectural style, the design of its outdoors sites,the natural
scenery that surrounds it and the testimonial values that it
represents.
Today, San Pedro de Timote has been totally refurbished to be a
“Hotel de Campo”, with all the services and
amenities
needed for a pleasant stay.
