southwest of Rio and features classical 18th century Portuguese
colonial buildings, which are listed as national historical monuments.
In the early 1700’s Paraty was the second most important port
in the country, where Mina Gerais State gold was painstakingly
transported over the mountains to Paraty and then shipped to Portugal,
until a better route was established north of Rio, leaving Paraty as it

ECOLOGICAL REFUGE
The Caiman Ecological Refuge has four comfortable
lodges each with different architectural styles
designed to blend in with the landscape.
Accommodating up to 70 people in lodges, Caiman
offers an opportunity to get to know the wonders
of the Pantanal in rustic comfort.
Two retreat structures with screened areas to hang hammocks for overnight
stays, as well as a kitchen and bathroom, were constructed for tours in far
off areas such as the Cattle Drive, or the River Aquidauana tour.
All lodges are equipped with in room air conditioners, ceiling fans, private
bathrooms with hot water, electric outlets adapted for 110 volts, living
rooms and pools. Each lodge operates independently (meals, tours, and
guides), except the pousada PIÚVA, where only breakfast is served. The
guests at PIÚVA have their main meals as lunch and dinner at nearby
pousada Sede.
