LA PAZ STOPOVER
3
Days / 2 Nights |
Bolivia's capital and largest city is located some 3,600 metes above sea
level. The city is home to 1 million "pacenos", as the residents are called.
The area around La Paz is arid desert in contrast to the snow capped Mt
Illimani in the distance. The main boulevard features many of the city's most
notable sights including a 16th century church of San Francisco and Calle
Sagarnaga, where local artisans sell their products.
In Miraflores you will find the Open Air Museum of Tiawanacu and the
Botanical Gardens. Just outside the city are the Moon Valley and Mallasilla,
and the pre-Inca ruins of Tiahuanacu are only an hour away.
La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, looks like a moon crater. The
city is 4km (2mi) above sea level, situated on a canyon floor, which shows
only a hint of greenery. Even oxygen is at a premium. Fortunately, the life and
colour of La Paz is found in its people and culture, not in its landscape.
Visit a typical Indian market, the famous Witch Doctor's market and the San
Francisco Colonial Church. Other places of interest include the Plaza Murillo
where the Cathedral, the Government Palace and the National Congress
buildings are located, the museums in "Calle Jaén", the open-air museum
from the Tiwanaku Culture, the residential areas of Obrajes, Calacoto and
La Florida ending with a trip to the see unique rose coloured volcanic
formations of Moon Valley.
