The Wonders of a Peruvian Homestay

Peru is a melting pot of cultures who have found their place in a land of arid plains, tropical forests, and the highest of peaks. With a cultural makeup that is rich and diverse, stemming from the ancient civilisations that inhabited present-day Peru, to the influx of European, African, and Asian populations, Peru has become a wondrous land of incredible food, music, art, and culture.

When visiting this beautiful nation, it is hard not to get swept up and even overwhelmed by the rich diversity of its people. It’s enchanting, in the capital Lima it runs like a harmony in chaotic motion, and the scents of the city’s culinary genius over 400 years in the making follow you as you wander through its colonial streets.

But there is much to be enjoyed outside of Lima, including that of a joyous homestay with a local Indigenous family in the Maras District, near Cusco. With a guided homestay, not only are you contributing to the development of the Mullak’as-Misminay community you will be staying with, but you will also experience life in a way unseen in western cultures. You will enjoy the work and activities undertaken by this joyous group of people, and find that it will be a truly enlightening endeavour whilst in Peru.

Read ahead to find out why a homestay with the traditional indigenous community of Mullak’as-Misminay is one of the ultimate experiences you could have in South America.

Experience life like never before

The community of Mullak’as-Misminay is comprised of happy, friendly Indigenous people who will welcome you as family upon your arrival to their village. You will be greeted with traditional song and dance and there will be coca tea on offer to help you adjust to the altitude.

When you are there you will take part in three daily activities of the community, and these include weaving sessions, construction of Incan adobe bricks for construction, cooking classes, donkey rides, and treks upwards to the site of Mirador de Moray, where ancient terraces used for growing certain crops still hold their place within the community. You can also take part in the cooking of the lovely pachamanca, a traditional dish of meat and vegetables cooked in the ground, covered with hot stones.

It is without doubt that this is one of the most unique and enjoyable experiences you can have visiting the incredible nation of Peru, and South America Tourism has you covered getting there. In association with the Mullak’as-Misminay community we provide these wonderful homestays and help you to experience the beauty and harmony of their culture.
