Before Christopher Columbus set sail for the New World, the valley of Mexico was already a bustling centre of commerce. The longest continuously inhabited city in the Western hemisphere, Mexico City is also one of the largest cities in the world. Once called Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital city was built on an island in a shallow lake. The Spanish crown, led by Hernan Cortes, conquered the Aztec empire in 1521. It was not until the early 19th century however that Mexico began its long, hard quest for independence - which it won in 1821.
Mexico City spreads out over 200km. The Zocalo, or central plaza, is the world's largest square and the city's historic district. The vast history of the city can be explored through the district's museums, hotels, cathedrals and public buildings.
