Some three hours drive from Sucre you reach Potosi. In 1544 the conquistadors discovered Cerro Rico, 'Rich Mountain' a barren hill of silver ore in the altiplano of Bolivia. At the base of this hill at approximately 4,000 metres above sea level is this well-preserved mining town from Spanish colonial rule. Just off the Central Plaza is the Casa Real de la Moneda, an enormous fortress-like building which occupies an entire city block with walls a metre thick, which houses a fine museum.
